Personal coaching is one-to-one contact with someone that is designed to help the person clarify goals, develop the behaviors and attitudes to achieve those goals, and focus energy in the direction of achievement. The simple fact of having a focused coaching time every week is a motivation for people. It is a method for helping people achieve their dreams. Because the coach is an unbiased observer, he/she can often see the entire picture more clearly. While this process is not really new, the idea of personal coaching as a career is. Coaching differs from therapy in that there is no in-depth psychological processing and extensive focus on the past.
How does coaching using the Louise Hay methods differ from other coaching?
One of the fundamentals of Louise Hay's work is that loving yourself is a part of the solution, regardless of the part of your lífe you want to chanqe. So teaching clients to use mirror work and other techniques to love and accept themselves is part of coaching people from Louise's framework. In addition, this is a spiritual philosophy, so we know that there is a Power and Presence within us that guides and directs us. We don't have to do all the work!
What happens in a coachinq session?
In the first few sessions, the coach helps the person clarify and set their goals. The coach would begin teaching the fundamentals of personal change: loving yourseif, mirror work, changing negative thoughts, and using affirmations and visualization. As the sessions continue, the coach reinforces these tools. After setting the BIG goal(s), each week the coach reviews how the client has done in the previous week with behavior changes, meeting smaller goals, and/or identifying challenges that are creating blocks. The coach motivates the person with positive feedback on their efforts (even if not successfui that week.)
FIRST SESSION
Written assessments
Have the client fill out the initial goal sheet and the stress assessments. It is convenient to ask people to rate the different areas of their life because it give you an overview of how they felt about every area, not just the one they wanted to focus on. These ratings help the coach to work with the person more effectively. For example, if someone came in wanting to improve their job situation AND rated "Ability to assert yourself" low, then teaching techniques for effective communication would probably be a focus. The stress assessments questionnaire is used in conjunction with Louise's book, Heal Your Body. For example, if someone checked "Frequent headaches", the person was usually very self-critical and anxious.
Mirror work
Hand the person a mirror and ask him/her to look in his or her own eyes. They are guided through the exercise from the workshop. The coach explains why loving yourself is so important. The person is given the handout, 10 Ways to Love Yourself.
Clarify the person's goals
The coach identifies some preliminary steps toward those goals that the person can work on for the next week.
Listen
The coach listens very carefully to what the person says. He/She notices the negative affirmations that are used so that he/she can help the person change them. The person is asked to write some affirmations for the next session.
How many coaching sessions are needed?
This depends on a number of factors, including how quickly the client can incorporate the new behaviors and take steps toward their goals, as well as finances. Most coaches ask people for a commitment of several months to really give the process time to work.
Will everyone benefit from coaching?
Most people will, to the extent they are really ready to take responsibility for the direction of their life and take action. However, if someone rates himself or herself as really depressed and having no purpose in life, this is definitely someone to refer to tradicional therapy. The coach will have those referral sources already in place if the client need them! The coaches are ready to pay attention to their own feelings. lf their feel they can't help someone for some reason, they will refer the client to a therapist or other resource. We work honestly!
